About massage

At Riverstone Counselling, our hand & arm and Foot & lower leg massage can be performed with a variety of non-scented oils, or with aromatherapy oils for added benefits.

Benefits

Aromatherapy massage combines the therapeutic benefits of massage with the healing properties of essential oils. This holistic treatment helps reduce stress and anxiety by promoting deep relaxation through both touch and scent. The inhalation and absorption of essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint can enhance mood, calm the nervous system, and support emotional well-being.

Physically, aromatherapy massage can relieve muscle tension, improve blood circulation, and reduce pain or inflammation. It may also boost the immune system by stimulating lymphatic drainage and detoxification.

Additionally, aromatherapy massage can improve sleep quality, ease headaches, and support hormonal balance. The combination of soothing massage strokes and aromatic oils creates a multisensory experience that benefits both body and mind.

It is a gentle, non-invasive therapy suitable for most people and an effective way to support overall wellness.

Contra-indications – who should not have massage?

Aromatherapy massage is generally safe, but certain conditions require caution or should be avoided. Contraindications include allergies or sensitivities to essential oils, skin conditions like eczema, rashes, or open wounds, and respiratory issues such as asthma, which may be triggered by strong scents.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid certain essential oils (e.g., clary sage, rosemary, jasmine) unless approved by a qualified practitioner. People with epilepsy, high or low blood pressure, or hormone-sensitive conditions should also consult a healthcare provider, as some oils can affect these conditions.

Avoid aromatherapy massage if you have a fever, infection, recent surgery, or are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Individuals with cancer or serious medical conditions should seek medical advice before treatment.

Always inform the therapist of your health history and allergies to ensure the safe selection and use of essential oils during the massage.

I was extremely nervous going to my first appointment, but Lorraine made me feel comfortable straight away. I thought she would give me answers and advice, but instead I learned so much about myself, and became able to decide for myself what I really wanted to do.
